休斯敦大学的历史可以追溯到1839年。当时德克萨斯州休斯敦市的一批浸信会教徒成立了德克萨斯州浸信会医学教育协会，并在当地一家医院里开办了一所医学院。这所医学院后来成为德克萨斯州立大学的一部分。随着时间的推移，该校逐渐发展壮大，并在1977年正式更名为休斯敦Baptist医学中心。
2002年3月5日,休斯敦Baptist医学中心正式更名为“休斯敦大学”,标志着该校由一所以医务教育为主的特殊医疗机构发展成为一所集多领域于一体的多功能大学,并开始以“以人为本,服务人民,创造价值”作为办学宗旨,致力于培养能够在不同国家和地区发挥作用的杰出人才。
